Blue eyed army

Blue Eyed Army does not explicitly explain what the song is about; it sparks curiosity. Only as the song unfolds does the listener discover that it is not about blue eyes, but about blue eyes bruised by comrades and about trust being damaged.

Almost human, in the distance watched an eye
likely not ready for a covering compromise
Very well hidden and yet bewildered close
Now you got the facts right under your nose
Grey day twenty seven two and five
The bloody- dad and his mystery wife
Wrestling a play into a real fight
None knowing it instantly saw the light
Woken up leaders, are watching the local news
Realising failure, they donÂ’t now what to say or do
If at least they would have been knocked down
In their clothes: these words the press made shine ... tell me now
The savage blue didnÂ’t like the game and see
The mystery housewife seemed to agree
So they where placed before the all-knowing eye
With bare fist to fight so that none could deny
The brave man contest this change by saying
Some common sense please and refused obeying
He scrupulously was kicked on the head and stayed
motionless laying on the field on which they played
Wild aggression ainÂ’t right, this ainÂ’t it's place
I want to say this right into your non hit face
What we miss here is making friends for life
you're not one of us, you now must realise

BLUE EYED ARMY
November morning, cold and grey,
a baptism was underway.
A man and wife, a foolish play,
the laughter carried far away.
No one knew what lay ahead,
how quickly fun would turn to dread.
One reckless voice called from the crowd:
"Let them fight, and fight them proud."
Blue Eyed Army,
what have you done?
Brothers bruising brothers
beneath the autumn sun.
Blue Eyed Army,
is this your way?
Building trust with broken fists
at the start of every day?
The chosen men were called to stand,
bare fists raised at one command.
One stepped back and calmly said:
"This makes no sense. Enough instead."
He would not strike a fellow man,
would not play the role they planned.
Then came a blow, unfair and hard,
from someone meant to be his guard.
Blue Eyed Army,
look into his eyes.
Not an enemy before you,
not a foe in disguise.
Blue Eyed Army,
tell me if you can:
How do you forge brotherhood
by breaking down a man?
He fell and did not move at all,
silent on the training field.
The game was over in a breath,
its hidden truth revealed.
The officers watched the evening news,
concerned by what the cameras showed.
Not by violence, not by pain,
but by the nakedness exposed.
No angry words for what was done,
no questions asked of anyone.
The wrong scandal filled the air,
while a wounded soldier lay there.
Blue Eyed Army,
that's what they became:
Men marked not by battle,
but by a brother's shame.
Blue Eyed Army,
the bruise will fade away,
but trust once lost between two men
may never find its way.
We train for wars beyond the gate,
for days when lives depend on fate.
Yet what survives inside my mind
is how we treated our own kind.
And I still wonder to this day,
when all the shouting died away:
Which wound was deepest in the end—
the blackened eye,
or the broken friend?
