More Than Coach and Client

I thought you liked being there,
among our sounds, our melodies,
between the moments that came together
and those we still had to find.

I thought that, for you too,
this was more than just work,
a place for joy,
a moment to simply breathe.

Then I heard that it was different.
That our music didn’t really speak to you,
that coaching us
was perhaps more work than pleasure.

You know I’m honest:
if something doesn’t sound right, I say so.
If it doesn’t move me,
I won’t pretend that it does.

Maybe that is exactly
why this hurts so much.

I thought there was something more.
More than coach and client.
More than rehearsals and performances.
Something about making music together,
about joy, trust, connection.

And only now do I hear
how you really felt,
just as you are about to
leave us for good.

I’m not angry.
Just sad
because something that was
so beautiful to me
now slowly seems to fade.

So yes…
disappointed.

Not because you didn’t love our music,
but because I thought
that, to you,
we were somehow
more than just coach and client.
